Lauren Smith, Chapter President
Happy February,
ASLA Utah has been brainstorming how we can better serve our chapter. Currently, we are working on getting our Chapters LACES Certification to allow for us to automatically track all events that you attend! This will be a great resource for CE tracking for your Utah, and other state, registrations.
We currently have five sub-committees branches from the Executive Committee: Activities, Advocacy, Membership, Social Media and Utah Conference. As our chapter grows, we’re going to be looking for more volunteers. If you’re interested in getting involved, please reach out to me or anyone on the Executive Committee. You can let us know how you’d like to volunteer or we can add you to the committee that needs the most help.
Speaking of Social Media, if you don’t already follow us on Instagram, do so now! You can find us by searching @aslautah We’re ramping up our Instagram content and will be putting out a call for collaborators soon. Think: member, firm, project spotlights; sketches; student work; etc. You don’t want to miss out.
News from National:
Have an idea that will change the field of landscape architecture? Submit a Game Changer session proposal for your chance to present at the ASLA Conference on Landscape Architecture.
It takes big ideas to move a profession forward – ideas from different perspectives, voices, and backgrounds. Those big ideas could come from you.
Submissions will be selected by popular vote! Deadline: March 23, 2020 at 12:00 PM PT.
That’s all for this month, look forward to seeing you all at the next ASLA Utah event!
Cheers!
Lauren Smith
2020 Conference on Landscape Architecture Update
Colin Olson, Past President
I’m excited to announce Kevin Burke, Design Director for Atlanta BeltLine Inc. as the keynote speaker for this year’s conference.
Mr. Burke is the Director of Design for Atlanta BeltLine Inc. and has thirty-eight years of experience on a plethora of institutional, roadway, college and university, residential, multi-use trail, and park projects. He coordinates design and construction efforts for all public open spaces and serves as the chair of the ABI design Review Committee. He implemented the requirement that all ABI projects initiated since 2018 will be SITES certified and was the organizer of ABI’s Organic Land Care Symposium which informed the public about more sustainable ways of maintaining our public spaces. Mr. Burke has a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture degree from Utah State University and in 2019 became a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects.
From the project’s own website: As one of the largest, most wide-ranging urban redevelopment programs in the United States, the Atlanta BeltLine is the catalyst for making Atlanta a global beacon for equitable, inclusive, and sustainable city life.
The schedule is coming together and we are in the process of finalizing more details for speakers, content and walking tours. Expect multiple walking tours, a robust Expo, and a lot of discussion about green infrastructure and adaptable communities!
Registration for the Friday, May 15th conference is open on the ASLA Utah website. Reserve your spot soon!
