Approaching Decision-Makers for Water Efficient Landscapes - Logan, Utah

A game changer for the University if the project can be implemented.
— ASLA Arizona Awards Juror

A low water planting scheme for the Old Main building at USU.

PROJECT SUMMARY

The Great Salt Lake's dwindling water levels pose an existential threat to regional ecology. While policies and studies focus on agricultural and residential water use, state institutions remain untouched. Utah State University, the land-grant institution, benefits from inexpensive water, hindering the adoption of water-efficient practices.

This project aims to save 9 million gallons annually by converting 8.2 acres of turf into water-wise sanctuaries including the campus’ iconic entrance, Old Main Hill, to a water-wise sanctuary. This audacious campaign seeks to communicate the urgent need for sustainable water management to decision-makers in hopes of meeting fruition.

By converting 48% of existing grass on campus, USU would use 30% less water.
