Voices Of Main Street - Midvale, Utah

Great storytelling through visual graphics and diagrams. This will be a game changer for this community!
— ASLA [state chapter] Awards Jury

After decades of disinvestment, Midvale is seeking to capitalize on new interest, reinvigorate the community and create a vibrant Main Street.

PROJECT SUMMARY

The Voices of Main Street project is more than a mere facelift; it is a comprehensive effort to blend the past, present, and future of this historic thoroughfare. The design process involved a unique approach to engage the community, ensuring that the voices of residents, local business owners, and stakeholders were heard and integrated into the project. This collaborative approach has fostered a sense of ownership and pride within the community, laying a strong foundation for the project's success.

Responding to a rich history and celebrating the unique character of Midvale’s Main Street, the project focuses on creating a flexible street that can allow for various types of social gathering and activation. While maintaining the overall road geometry and existing curb, a series of strategically localized interventions re-imagine the public space and set the framework for future redevelopment. A central Plaza, activated bulb-outs, and raised intersections work together to create a pedestrian friendly environment, that will support the upcoming arts district designation and other revitalization efforts.

The flexibility of the new plaza and raised intersection design allows for potential closures and community events.
